About Us

Owned & Operated by Historic Harrisville since 2008

The Harrisville General Store has been in operation since 1838. While it has had various owners through the decades, the store has been owned and operated by Historic Harrisville (HHI) since 2008.

HHI has long recognized the importance of the store as a community hub and resource, and took the operation under its nonprofit wing at a critical time when the business was for sale, and its future uncertain.

HGS’s Store Manager, Laura Carden (pictured) and her team fill the case with homemade foods made of fresh, local ingredients, stocking the shelves with groceries and specialty foods, and hosting regular store dinners.

Thanks to Historic Harrisville’s ongoing support, as well as the dedication and creativity of the Harrisville General Store staff, our store remains a vital, dynamic presence in the Harrisville community.

We hope you will stop by for homemade cider donuts or soup, a Harrisville breakfast sandwich, coffee, beer, wine, or an assortment of local meat, produce, and more. And be sure to check out our new Book Nook for an eclectic mix of fiction, non-fiction, local authors, and kids’ books for sale.

Follow us on Facebook or Instagram or subscribe to the General Store newsletter to learn about the store’s latest menus, meals, and offerings.

Friends of the

Harrisville General Store

you can make a difference!

I’m sure we all agree that it’s remarkable to live in Harrisville—an authentic and still-thriving small town in New England. It’s a place known for its tight-knit community and its commitment to preservation in a way that encourages people to live and work here. An essential part of that is having a place where people can grab a cup of coffee and catch up with their neighbors, shop for essentials, enjoy delicious homemade meals, or read a book from the Book Nook. The Harrisville General Store is that gathering place!

Historic Harrisville owns the store and has long recognized the importance of the store as a community hub and resource —the food is delicious and locally sourced, the store stocks necessary staples for your kitchen, it employs your neighbors, it’s open year-round, and it exists for us all. It’s much greater than the sum of its parts—it’s an essential, living, vibrant entity, and a source of deep connection. It’s the lifeblood of Harrisville!

Most importantly, the General Store is devoted to the preservation of a way of life—the community energy of a small, thriving, New England village. This is the stuff dreams are made of: an olden day’s reality that has, in many places, faded into memory as big box stores and online ordering supplant local businesses. In Harrisville, this dream is still alive and real!

All of this requires not only good management, but additional support from individuals. If we were running the store strictly as a for-profit business, we would close in the winter and make other decisions for profit instead of for the benefit of the community. But that isn’t what the HGS is about. Last year charitable donations from the Friends of the Harrisville Store helped sustain the store and its employees through the year and allowed the store to retain the magic that is so important to the quality of life we all enjoy in Harrisville. For that we are most grateful. We want to keep the store thriving this way year after year, so we are asking you to make a financial gift today. Your donation will keep the Harrisville General Store and the dream alive!
